Project Overview

In 2020, as a UI/Graphic Designer applying usability best practices, I collaborated with the founders, developers, marketing, and the customer product team to enhance the user experience. This brief case study focuses on the redesign of the embedded software interface’s “photo preview” feature and flow improvement. Project duration: 3-week sprint.

Project Constraints

At the time of this project, the company did not have a dedicated user research function, so user insights were primarily gathered through customer service feedback and internal discussions. My role focused on UI and visual design; however, I already had practical experience and knowledge in UX. I stay current with industry trends, which enabled me to apply usability best practices throughout the process. Although formal user research and iterative testing were not included, I leveraged the available insights to address user needs and deliver effective solutions. While this cross-team approach led to positive results, I believe that formal user research remains essential and should not be overlooked in the long term.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The Challenge

The previous Photo booth interface had some usability issues. Most critically, features and buttons were taking up valuable screen space, significantly reducing the area available for users to preview their photos before printing. This made it difficult for users to properly review and select their images—especially on smaller screens—often resulting in people being cut out of the picture frame.

Ideation & Solution Exploration

During this phase, I focused on translating user pain points and project goals into actionable design concepts. I explored some approaches to address the core challenges, particularly around maximizing the photo preview and simplifying the user journey. Our exploration was guided by key hypotheses, which informed our design decisions and helped us prioritize features.

Hypotheses

Hypotheses

Hypotheses

  • If we enlarge the photo preview area, users will make fewer mistakes when selecting and printing photos

  • If we add a timer selection before photo capture, users will better understand the process and feel more prepared for their photos

  • If we simplify the interface, users will complete the photo session more quickly and with less confusion

Implementation

During this phase, I concentrated on thoroughly documenting design specifications for the development team. Feature prioritization was guided by user needs and technical feasibility. Both internal and customer feedback emphasized the enhanced ease of use and the greatly improved photo viewing experience.

Reflection

Collaboration with other departments provided valuable user feedback and insights, even though we did not conduct formal user research sessions. As a UI/UX professional, I consider user research and interviews essential and highly relevant for guiding design decisions. While we achieved positive results through cross-team collaboration, I recognize that skipping formal research is a known risk and not a recommended long-term approach.

  • Small usability improvements matter: Even minor interface enhancements can significantly boost accuracy, efficiency, and user satisfaction.

  • Iterative testing drives better outcomes: Regular feedback and multiple design iterations help uncover pain points early and refine the product.

  • Stakeholder alignment accelerates success: Ongoing communication with stakeholders ensures the solution meets both business and regulatory requirements.
